Determination and the Power of Support!

Elizabeth G. experienced a life-changing car accident in August 2023, which caused severe injuries to her abdomen, spine, ribs, and wrist. The impact of the seatbelt resulted in significant abdominal trauma, including damage to a major artery.

After receiving initial treatment at Hoag Memorial Hospital and completing their rehabilitation program, Elizabeth began intensive home and community therapy with Rehab Without Walls (RWW) in January. Through our program, she is receiving the specialized care needed to regain her independence and rebuild her daily life.

Her physical therapist Dave taught her to open doors, shop, and stay active in the gym. Liz rekindled her passion for cooking with support from her occupational therapy team, Vickie, and Margit, making appropriate adaptions to her kitchen. She found strength in community resources thanks to her social worker Sanda, helping to navigate financial resources and scholarships while providing emotional support. Clinical coordinator Vickie ensured seamless care and progress updates with her physicians.

Liz states this about her care team, “The first time going in public was nerve-wracking, but Dave helped me feel comfortable and confident beyond what I imagined. Sanda helped me find resources for financial aid, scholarships, and peer support while listening to my challenges. She also lent an ear so I could express the unique challenges and feelings I had about my new normal.”

After Liz was discharged from RWW in March 2024, she began outpatient therapy until that December. She now uses a custom wheelchair, drives with adaptive controls, attends social events, and returned to college. Liz’s journey reflects her determination and the power of a supportive team, enabling her to thrive independently at home and in the community.
